Three Weeks on the Farm — Chicks, Calves, the Royal Cornwall Show and Cereals 2026 at Diddly Squat
Share
If you'd been around our place in Padstow, Cornwall over the last three weeks, you wouldn't have been short of something to watch.
The chicks are in - They arrived. Every year this happens and every year it still gets us. One morning the barn's quiet, and then suddenly it isn't — thousands of turkey chicks, both Bronze and White, all fluff and noise and absolute determination to investigate everything at once. These photos are of the White chicks, but trust us — the Bronze are equally full of themselves. These are the birds that'll be on Christmas tables across the country come December. Right now they're tiny. They'll spend the next six months growing slowly on wheat and oats we grow right here on the farm, with all the time in the world. That's the whole point, really.

The Fendt was out until sunset and the fields that were knee-high a fortnight ago are now neatly baled and wrapped. The silage keeps the beef and dairy herd going through the winter — it's one of those jobs that hangs over you until it's done, and then the whole farm relaxes. Job done.

We never miss the Royal Cornwall Show — it's the highlight of the farming year. More than just a show, it's the one time when the whole farming community comes together, catches up, and remembers why they do what they do. The whole family made it to Wadebridge this year and had two brilliant days. The livestock was exceptional, the atmosphere was everything we love about it. The third day was rained off, so we'll look forward to all three days next year.
Richard took three of the children up to Cereals 2026](https://www.thecerealsevent.co.uk/), the UK's biggest arable event, held this year at Jeremy Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm in the Cotswolds. More than 25,000 people turned up across the two days. Just days after we were walking around his field at Diddly Squat, Jeremy announced his cancer diagnosis. It made us reflect on the day a little differently. We wish him a full recovery. He's been the best champion farming has ever had.

So that's the last three weeks. I'm sure the next three weeks will be just as packed!
